Review of the Concept 2 Rowing Machine
Professional, collegiate and the rest of us first learned of Concept 2 rower exercise machines back in the early 1980s. The rowing equipment are made and shipped from Vermont, and the company produced this rowing machine just because they were so aware of the need to train during winter months. So it makes sense that designing a high quality rowing machine for indoor use would be a fantastic idea. Another serious concern was the desire to make the very best using superior standards for design and materials. The person writing this article, me of course, is a Concept 2 client, and I truly can tell you how satisfied I am with their product. This article will review this unique and versatile rowing machine for those who are thinking about obtaining one to enjoy.
The Concept 2 company makes the Model D and E with the latter being pricier. If you wish to spend less, then the Model D is what you want to look at. The essential accessory that accompanies every Concept 2 rowing machine is the PM3 or PM4 performance monitor. The PM3 is standard on the Model D with a choice to upgrade to the PM4. The higher priced Model E always includes the PM4 with it as the primary monitoring device. You can expect to pay up to $350 more with the Model E rower, and the Model D has two different prices for the upgrades.
You will be able to check how well you are progressing with the performance monitors as well as monitoring your pulse. Your pulse rate is monitored by a device that you place across your chest. You may think it will be noticeable and cause discomfort, but that isn't true. I can tell you from personal experience that you won't notice it's there while you are exercising. The info from the heart rate monitor is actually sent to the PM3 or PM4 for processing and display.
The resistance to rowing is accomplished by utilizing an intelligently designed flywheel that is very much like a manual fan. There are no safety issues with this as it is entirely enclosed in a plastic assembly. The manner in which you alter the resistance level with rowing is a mechanical, and manual, lever on the flywheel. There are also no concerns with noise because the overall rower is almost silent during rowing. During rowing operations, the fan-like flywheel gives off a low level sound, and you can feel the air movement at certain angles. This moving air sound from the flywheel assembly is like a fan that is on at a very low speed setting. Unless the person in the other room is a very light sleeper, you will have no issues with waking up other people.
You can select the type of performance metrics that best fits you from a simple to understand menu on either the PM3 or PM4. There are enough data types to satisfy the needs of either competitive rowers or someone who wants a great workout. Your approach will largely depend on by your current fitness level and general reason for using the rower. Most of the rowers who compete at the college level use the Concept 2 to prepare themselves, so they will obviously pay attention to specific data types.
