Amber Glass

Embers, too, I have had cast upon my path,
not by jealous deities expressing hot wrath,
nor by firey spirits seeking out my fortitude.
I bring each trial upon myself with solitude.

When one day, as I must, I face the cliffs
that I must atempt to climb; not Everest,
but some unnamed monolith far from this stone,
I know that I will face the task alone.

When the clarity of sight that is found atop peaks
is won by by one found worthy, nature speaks.
When I was a child, who knew yet no spoken words
She gave me the task of composing her final dirge.

I sing this sorrowing melody over cold ruins and ash;
I sing above the sounds of teeth that gnash.
I let my voice swell and join the choir of stars;
walking on amber unseen by passing cars.
Only half of me is in the Philippines.
