Front Porch wood flooring?
I just bought a new house with a front porch that needs some work. The structure is in good shape but many of the floor boards are rotting so I want to start over with a new floor.
I was originally planning on replacing it with t & g Douglas Fir. From what I have researched, this is what most likely been originally used when the house was made (American Foursquare 1914).
However I am now wondering if I could replace it with reclaimed wide planks...maybe southern pine or cypress. I love the look and the idea of reusing resources but I live in Chicago and don't want to waste the money if they aren't going to last a while.
Either way I am not going to paint but plan to stain and seal.

Hines used to carry the doug fir T & G but the economy closed down their city locations, you would have to drive out to the boondocks to get it from them. Don't go with any of these new plastic composite T & G products. The ones I've installed the manufacturers always seem to discontinue them due to some issue. Give them more time to get it right.
Cypress is supposed to be good outside, since it grows in swampy conditions, but I doubt you will get the old growth timbers that will have nice tight growth rings. Untreated southern pine wouldn't last.
If cost is not a consideration take a look at ipe. I put some on a porch in Hinsdale and it looked great even before the sealer was applied. The installation took longer than other types because the wood is so hard every piece needs to be predrilled for the fasteners. Use stainless steel.
If cost is an issue hen the old timer is right, use pressure treated. it can be stained almost any color. The wide planks you talked about would not be in keeping with the traditional look of a four square. They always used 4 inch T & G way back then.
