Why Sodium Lights are Recommended Alternatives to Outdoor Fluorescent Light Fixtures by Iainjenkin
From an advertising and marketing point of view, illuminating a business premises can be highly rewarding. It is certainly something that many restaurants, hotels, country clubs and health spas willingly turn to, and for the most part the floodlighting they use are outdoor fluorescent light fixtures that can give years of reliable service. However, there are other options that can be more effective and more financially rewarding. While the fluorescent option has long been hailed as the best in terms of the life span and energy efficiency of a light, there are now Metal Halide, and low pressure and High Pressure sodium lamp options to consider. There can be little doubt that the floodlight is the best possible lighting fixture to cover the area of a building facade. The only question is what source of light should be availed of, which will ensure a sensible consumption of energy at an acceptable overall cost. When one looks at the various options, each one has their advantages, but in many respects the sodium light option works best. Sodium lights work by agitating sodium vapour by electricity, forcing it into an excited state which, in turn, results in the sodium producing light. There are two types of sodium lights, namely low pressure and high pressure lights, both of which have their particular strengths. The key differences between the two is that the low pressure version uses solid sodium in a borosilicate glass discharge arc tube, while the high pressure version is smaller and also has mercury inside. Low pressure sodium lamps are considered to be the most energy efficient lamps available, though they are not perfect illuminators. They are most commonly used in street lamps and as part of security systems, situation where illumination is important but the actual quality of the light is not essential. They typically give off an orange glow, a fact which rules them out of many commercial or retail situations, and pretty much relegates them to outdoor manufacturing or compound lighting. However, within the role of all night illuminators, they are perfect both from a practical and cost point of view. Their efficiency level placing them far above fluorescent, metal halide and other low energy consuming lights, while their consistency over long periods of time mean they can be left to do their job without needing regular maintenance. In fact, such bulbs can last for between 12,000 and 18,000 hours. The high pressure version, however, lasts somewhat longer, with as many as 24,000 hours under its belt before its effectiveness starts to wane. It is also slightly lower in its efficiency as it emits 50-140 lumens per watts of light as opposed to a low pressure rate of 60-150 lumens. The quality of light is also slightly better, with a warmer white light emitted, which means that they are seen as a more suitable high bay lighting solution, and are often employed as such. In terms of illuminating the exterior of a building, however, there is a more significant visible difference, with the warm glow serving to light up a building in a more pleasing hue than the low pressure alternative. Perhaps the best quality light of all comes from the metal halide lamps that which produce a crisper Bright White light, rather than one with a yellowish hue. However, this type of light is not as efficient as the high pressure sodium lamp, with a maximum of 115 lumens per watt, and even if 150w bulbs are generally used, as opposed to 400w bulbs used by the sodium option, they still fall a little short performance wise. Unsurprisingly, with such an impressive rate of efficiency, many public sector and local government buildings, as well as corporate and commercial entities, like banks and hotels, are availing of this type of floodlight to highlight the magnificence of their premises at night time. As a form of promotion, it is highly effective, maintaining the presence of a business by flooding it with a warm, welcoming glow against an otherwise dark backdrop. And while the more common fluorescent light fixtures of recent decades are still viable options, they are arguably less worthwhile to utilise than the sodium option, when outdoors at least.
