How can I make a circuit that will cause a 12v bulb/LED to turn on 10 seconds after I have flipped a switch?
Something to do with a 555 timer maybe? I did research and found this http://www.circuitdb.com/show.php?cid=92 but I don't know much about electronics and can't understand it or know if it will work. The power supply for said circuit will be 8x AA batteries = 12V as that is what the LED is rated for (i think it's actually a minature edison bulb)
If you look up 555 timers (These are relatively simple microchips) on the internet, I am sure you will find some clear explanations on how they work. There are a two resistors and one capacitor that control the timing for these chips. If you can get a 'breadboard' - a sort of plate where you can plug in resistors, chips and so forth to make provisional circuits, and get a collection of components, you can play around with the circuit. if you first follow the instructions of how to wire it, then try to vary some of the timing components (the resistors and capacitor) you will actually learn something!
incidentally, you will be better off using a single 9 volt battery - like the ones you use in smoke alarms.
Many electronic kits have exactly the components to build such simple circuits.
The basic principle of these circuits is that you trickle electricity into a capacitor, limiting the rate of flow with a resistor, so that the charge on that side of the capacitor gradually moves, say, up (it can be up or down); that is, the voltage gradually moves ... up. Then you have a transistor's "gate" - the part of the transistor that controls whether it is conducting or not - connected to this changing voltage. When the voltage gets to a certain point - after enough electrons have flowed through the limiting resistor - the transistor switches on (or off). So by varying the resistance of the resistor, you can control the time it takes to charge a capacitor, and that controls when a switch - the transistor - turns on. You can also change the 'size' of the capacitor. A capacitor with a larger value takes more electrons to 'fill up' - to increase its voltage by any given amount.
Put into a very different context, imagine that you have a valve allowing water to enter a tank. When the tank is full, something happens. How long will it take to fill the tank? It depends on the size of the tank (the capacitor's capacitance) and on how tightly the valve is closed (the resistance of the resistor) at the inlet.
