Upper Cabinet Installation Tips by Jordy
There are several methods that are used for upper cabinet installation. These tips I am about to give you have come from thirty years of experience in installing cupboards. These techniques have proved to be the easiest way for me to hang uppers on the walls.
One of the first steps is to find where the studs or furring strips are located. I do this by tapping on the drywall with my knuckles first. After I find a location where I think there is one, I begin drilling three sixteenths inch holes in various places. These holes should be drilled in an area where the cupboards will cover them up once they are installed. When I hit the stud, I mark it. Next, I measure over sixteen inches from the mark and tap on the wall again looking for the next stud. Repeat the process until all of them are located and marked.
Determine where the bottom of the wall cabinets will be located off of the floor and make two adjustable prop sticks out of four pieces of pine. The standard height for installing wall cabinets is fifty four inches off of the floor. These props should be adjusted just a little higher than where the bottom of the cabinet will be.
Mark a level line on the wall for where the bottom of the first upper cabinet will be installed. You must get the first cabinet installed perfectly level. In most cases the first one to go up will be in a corner.
If you need to cut a filler and attach it to the cupboard do this next. It will be a good idea to hold a level against the wall where the filler will be installed to see if there are any dips or humps to account for. If you need to cut the filler crooked in order to get the cabinet to be installed plumb, then cut the filler crooked. The installation of all the cabinets must be level, plumb and square. All of the alterations to ensure the cupboards get installed level should be done on the fillers.
Drill three sixteenths inch wide holes in the back of the first cabinet corresponding in the same locations as where the studs are located on the wall.
Place the prop sticks on an angle, slightly below the level line. Lift the first upper cabinet up to the level line and adjust the props so that they support the weight of the cupboard. Hold the cabinet steady and secure it to the wall with number two screws.
Drywall screws can be used for anchoring the uppers to the walls. Most cabinet installation tips suggest using number two zink plated screws.
Move the props over to support the next wall cupboard to be installed. Drill the cabinet back in the locations where the screws will sink into the wall studs. Hold the upper in place, adjust the props to hold it up and then use clamps to align the cupboard face with the first wall cabinet you installed. Secure the clamps very tightly. Fasten the cabinets together in the front first, then secure the cabinet to the wall. Continue the process until all of the cabinets are installed.
These installation tips should serve you well. The most important thing to remember is to install all of your cupboards level and tight to the walls and ceiling.
