What do you know about wheat beer? by Larry Steevan
During in the Middle Ages, certain tribes in Germany started to brew a far lighter than typical ale. The reason behind this is the brewers used the most abundant brewing ingredients they had. Wheat grain and barley were such ingredients, and this practice lead to the introduction of the Weissbier. Weissbier was a lot lighter than the customary dark beers of that period, that's why the term "white beer" was coined and weisse in fact means "white". According to certain sources Weissbier is considered to be one of the oldest styles of beer. Some people believe similar styles were brewed as far back in 1040 AD at the world's oldest established brewery, Brauerei Weihenstephan in Freising, Germany.
At present, you get four main styles of Weissbier. They are Southern German Weissbier, Berliner Weisse, Belgian Witbier and American Wheat Beer. The Southern German Weissbier is more popularly recognized as Weizen or Hefeweizen. Belgian Witbier or White Ale is similar in a lot of aspects to unfiltered wheat beers but the main difference is that Belgian Witbier contains unmalted grains like wheat, barley and oats and also a range of spices.
When the term Hefeweizen is basically broken down, Hefe (yeast) Weizen (wheat) is of German derivation and conventionally means an unfiltered wheat beer which has yeast in it. It is regularly mentioned as "weissbier mit hefe". It is crafted with up to 50%-65% malted wheat and the rest of it is malted barley. Adding this wheat offers this beer a very crisp and refreshing profile. Hefeweizens are normally very much carbonated brews and when you pour these wonderful beers must be cloudy with pale gold to a range of amber shades. This is similar with many beers brewed using wheat and also wheat malted or raw are helpful in retaining head. You can plank off a spilling over head by soaking your glass in cold water beforehand.
It is expected that the yeast deposited at the bottom of the bottle also be poured into the glass. The recommended glassware for this beer is the long, slim trumpet style glasses and they are great for showing off the exciting head after a right pouring.
When comparing German-style Hefeweizen with American Wheat beers, the flavor is so much different. American Wheat beers usually have a neutral American yeast strain, which highlights the malt appeal a bit more, and have a much cleaner flavor. The usage of hops and malt also makes some differences. German Hefeweizens are slightly touched with hops, in order to avoid bring harshness to the subtle balance of esters, phenols and the fermented wheat flavor. Some American wheat beers are noticeably filtered and are similar to a pale variety of a regular American golden ale, these are generally summer seasonals and the only features that are absent are the yeasty flavors.
Irrespective of its origin, it appears that every wheat beer is a comfort in the summer heat. Here are few examples of the above mentioned. Ayinger Bräu-Weisse, Cambridge Hefeweizen, Haymarket Hefeweizen, Franziskaner Hefe, Franz Joseph Sailer Oberdorfer Weiss Helles, Hacker-Pschorr Hefe Weisse, Julius Echter Hefe-weisse, Paper City Hefe-wezien are some of the popular German or German-Style Hefeweizens. Popular American Wheat Beers include Climax Wheat, Redhook Hefeweizen, Summer Breeze, Summer Wheat Ale and UFO Hefeweizen.
