A kitchen can often be the busiest room in a house, so a design that takes into account functional lighting can make a world of difference as to how enjoyable a space is it to occupy.
Since the kitchen is now being used for numerous purposes - such as an office, somewhere for children to do homework, and a place for friends and family to gather - it has never been more important to find a perfect lighting solution.
Finding the right design for you can be a simple process when designing a kitchen. Designers will often try to identify the areas in the kitchen where it needs to be concentrated. Specific lighting can be assigned to different areas, for example track lights over a sink area can provide just the right amount of illumination needed for washing dishes. Lighting designs that take into account ambiences and intended uses for spaces often result in more effective and functional kitchens.
A combination of track or recessed and under-cabinet types will provide the best results for lighting up counter tops and thus creating a workspace that is shadow-free. Mounting the lights as close to the back of the cabinets as possible will help to prevent glare from work surfaces. Energy-efficient fixtures that cover two-thirds of the length of the counter can also be quite effective.
For the breakfast area a good overhead light is practical as this area is often used for reading. Kitchen lighting comes in a variety of styles, from chandeliers to modern halogen bulbs. Dimmer switches can often be useful in providing a number of different ambiences for various activities and times of the day. Kitchen designs that feature a range are always going to be more versatile than ones that do not. A good range of lighting can be achieved through using multiple layers of lighting, including accent lighting, ambient lighting and decorative lighting. Here are a few examples of lighting types which could be deployed in a kitchen:
Ambient - This covers general light that would be used for casual activities. It is normally achieved through reflected lights.
Task - An example of this is under-cabinet lighting. This type of light is often achieved with small light sources and is usually designed for specific tasks.
Decorative Lighting - This type of lighting is designed to add sophistication and colour to kitchens.
Down - This is energy efficient bulbs that consists of small-aperture cans in the ceiling. These often provide a shadow-free kitchen.
