Why Install Low Energy Light Bulbs?   by KuleKat

The following is extracted from Led Home Lighting - Installing Low Energy Light Bulbs which asks: so what is the problem with the regular incandescent lighting we're all used to?

First, it's inefficient, for which read expensive to run. If you convert to low energy lighting it will save you a lot of money. Lighting consumes 22% of the electrical power generated in the United States.

Nearly all the cost of a light bulb is the running cost - the price of electricity. The cost of the bulb itself is quite incidental by comparison. And as you know, the price of electricity is related to the cost of energy in general, itself determined by the price of oil, which is set on an upward trend, which means that the cost of lighting your home is also to set to increase inexorably.

Incandescent light bulbs waste in excess of 90% of their electricity as heat - only a small part of all that electricity is actually converted to light. If you could shift from 5% (or worse) efficiency to 95% (or better) efficiency for your lighting applications you would put a lot of that wasted money back into your own packet.

Second, incandescent lighting is shortly to be banned because, despite media efforts to cloud the issue with opinion, ignorance and froth, the governments of the developed world really do take global warming seriously and have already passed legislation to compel us all to convert to low energy lighting over the next 2 years. Continuing to waste heat and energy thru regular light bulbs is simply no longer an option the world can afford.

So, if low energy lighting is the answer for the future, the question for the present is: which type of low energy light bulb should you consider?

Obviously the base from which to gauge matters is the soon to be obsolete regular incandescent bulb. The tungsten halogen incandescent variant is significantly more efficient and halogen light bulbs can be a viable interim substitute lighting solution for a number of lighting applications.

Next to consider are Fluorescent and Compact Fluorescent (CFL) light bulbs. The many serious problems with CFL light bulbs and fluorescent lighting in general are well known. These represent a technology whose future is behind it - at best a stop-gap on the inevitable journey to the true - future of lighting.

LED home lighting will completely alter energy consumption throughout the world in the coming few years. Both governments and the lighting industry have invested massive support for LED research and development. The benefits of LED home lighting bring are obvious:

• Very low power consumption
• Climate friendly - convert energy to light, not heat
• Extremely long life span (50,000-100,000 hours)
• Wide variety of white tones and colors
• Ultra bright, clean light quality
• Dimmable
• Lightweight, compact and attractive to look at
• Environmentally friendly - no mercury or lead

Furthermore, Haitz's Law (named after scientist Roland Haitz) states that the price of LED lights falls by a factor of 10 each decade while performance grows by a factor of 20. At present the luminous efficiency (light output per watt of power consumed) of home LED lighting is doubling every 18 months which is comparable to the very similar Moore's Law in the computer chip industry.

Within a couple of years the inescapable logic of economics will ensure that LED home lighting will become the dominant force in all domestic lighting (and government legislation to wean the world off incandescent light bulbs will simply speed that process).

Even today it really is considerably cheaper to install a $45 LED light than a FREE incandescent, simply because of the cost of the electricity required to power the light bulb. Remember - the cost of lighting is not the purchase price, it's the running cost.

The time will very soon be upon us when LED products are a fraction of today's price and much brighter than their incandescent equivalents. That time will be quite a bit sooner than many people realise - remember the PC revolution? So now hopefully you better understand the answer to the question - why install low energy light bulbs?
