What does a nickel finish mean on a firearm?
Does this mean it's a nickel alloy and not steel? or just the paintjob is nickel or something? same thing with the blued complexion.
'Stainless' steel is alloyed with nickel to give it its' rust resistant properties, but this is NOT a 'nickel finish'.
Nickel finish is done by electroplating, instead of chemical processes, as many of the high-tech finishes are done today.
Nickel plating is EXACTLY the same as 'chroming' is done on auto and motorcycle parts. After fine polishing the components' surfaces to a mirror finish, the parts are first COPPER plated, then a second plating is done with nickel. Bike or car parts would then be further plated with chrome, but, as firearms receive much more handling and stress than other parts, the chroming is left off.
Cheap plating jobs, such as on 'Saturday Night Special' type guns, don't base-plate with copper first, and this is why, just like cheap chrome work on cars & bikes, tha plating peals so badly.
On the other hand, even the best nickel finishes may discolor and/or peal. I owned a nickeled 4" Colt Python .357 years ago that I shot in competition using 'full-house' combat loads, and, after 500 or so rounds, the front of the cylinder began to discolor & the plating started to peal. I contacted the local Colt rep. and he made arangements with the factory for a new replating, free-non gratis!
